Attorney Profiles
Marhsall DuBree Attorneys at Law are a small, talented team of dedicated professionals that include William Marshall and Sonya DuBree.
William Marshall
Bill is a Raleigh native. After graduating from N.C. State University, Bill was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. After a tour of duty in Korea and special assignment for training troops in Vietnam, he finished his career as a Captain in the Army Reserves.
He attended law school at Wake Forest University where he graduated in the top of his class. Upon graduation, Bill worked at the N.C. Supreme Court and subsequently opened his law practice in Raleigh in 1974.
Early in his career, Bill's practice consisted of criminal and family law cases as well as personal injury and real estate closings.
He often tried jury cases involving a wide range of legal issues from felonies to successful personal injury verdicts. In addition, his office practice included consulting with clients regarding contract law and the sale and closing of commercial and residential property.
During these years, Bill was an adjunct professor at N.C. State University where he taught Business Law, which included contracts, torts, business and judicial procedure.
Beginning around 1990, his practice began to focus on family law cases. As his family law practice grew, he began to emphasize this area of law. Since 1995, when the Alimony Law changed, Bill has concentrated on all aspects of family law, including, but not limited to, custody, child support, spousal support, property division and domestic violence.
In 2000, Bill was certified as a Mediator. His approach is to attempt an out-of-court settlement through negotiation, mediation or arbitration. However, his 38 years of trial experience allows him to fully and accurately evaluate client risk and likely outcome in litigation.
As a result of his experience, his hourly rate is $295.00. However, he has an associate attorney and paralegal that can handle the administrative matters at a much lower rate. Our goal is to expedite the case in the client's favor at a reasonable cost.
Sonya DuBree
Sonya DuBree is a managing partner at Marshall DuBree, Attorneys.
A third generation Raleigh native, Sonya has extensive ties to this community. Sonya's husband, Travis Morton, is partner with the firm of Brady, Nordgren, Morton and Malone. Her son, Luke, is in kindergarden. Being a mother provides special insight into family law matters and the effect of a parent's influence on a child's life.
Sonya received her Juris Doctor from the Campbell School of Law in 1994 and was admitted to the North Carolina Bar the same year. As a graduate of the 1994 Campbell Law School class, she can boast of a solid legal education and that she is a member of the only class in the history of North Carolina with a 100% bar exam passage rate.
While in law school, Sonya served as a clerk with the Wake County District Attorney's office. Sonya joined Marshall DuBree, Attorneys in 1994. Since the beginning of Sonya's practice, she has concentrated on family law, including child custody, child support, alimony, property distribution, domestic violence and restraining orders. The foundation received in the District Attorney's Office easily transitions into trial work. Her criminal law experience provides a strong foundation for litigating domestic violence cases.
In 2007, Sonya was certified as a Parenting Coordinator in Wake County. Enlisting a Parent Coordinator is an effective means of dealing with divorced parent's inability to agree on every day issues such as education and religious upbringing. When parents are unable to agree, a parenting coordinator will listen to both party's position and then institute a decision that promotes the best interest of the child.
Sonya is an experienced trial attorney and a strong negotiator. Sonya has also acted as a mediator to help other family law attorneys settle their cases.
Because of her years of experience and familiarity with the Wake County court system, Sonya's hourly rate is $295 per hour. Sonya works closely with her paralegal of seven years, Shelle DeTurk. A team approach ensures that even if Sonya is in trial, there will always be someone available to provide you with immediate assistance.
